One chance taken, then ninety minutes of holding the line. James McGinn struck in the twenty-eighth minute and Scotland spent the rest of the afternoon defending it, outshot fifteen to nine and giving up most of the ball. The expected goals finished dead level at 1.05 each, which is the polite way of saying this was no procession. But a goalkeeper with two saves and a back line that refused to crack got the job done. Not pretty. Three points rarely care.

Scotland's afternoon was effectively decided in the second minute, when Saibari punished a slow start. Chasing the game against the better side, they never found the cutting edge to trouble it — not a single shot on target, and only 0.54 expected goals to show for the effort. There was endeavour, but the final ball kept letting them down. A blunt day at the office, and a lesson in how an early goal can frame everything that follows.

Scotland ran into a storm. There is no shame in losing to a Brazil side that posted an expected-goals figure of 4.41 and a Vinicius Junior in this mood; few teams in this tournament would have lived with it. To their credit Scotland never folded — thirteen shots, four on target, a goalkeeper who made five saves to keep the bill to three. The damage was done early, two Vinicius goals inside the first half, and the game was up by the hour. They will meet kinder afternoons than this, and be better for surviving it.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
