About Cape Verde
Population 491K
- More Cape Verdeans live abroad — chiefly in the United States and Portugal — than on the islands themselves, and their remittances are worth roughly a fifth of the entire economy.
- It was the very first stop on Charles Darwin's voyage aboard HMS Beagle in 1832, years before he ever reached the Galápagos.
- Pico do Fogo, the largest active volcano in the region, last erupted in 2014 and rises more than 9,000 feet straight out of the Atlantic.
- In February 2024 it became just the third African country ever certified malaria-free.
- Many of the Atlantic's fiercest storms are born in the warm waters right off its shores — meteorologists literally call them 'Cape Verde hurricanes.'

Cape Verde 0–0 Spain
Six shots, twenty-six percent of the ball, and a clean sheet against one of the favourites. Cape Verde came to Atlanta and simply refused to fall. Seven saves stood between Spain's twenty-seven attempts and the goal that never came, a back line throwing itself in front of everything for ninety minutes. A nation valued at a fraction of its opponent walked off with a point nobody outside their own camp expected. This is the kind of goalless draw you frame and hang in the hall, and they earned every minute of it.

Cape Verde 2–2 Uruguay
Cape Verde were second best for long stretches and could not have cared less by the end. Kenny Lenini put them ahead inside 21 minutes; when Uruguay's quickfire double either side of the interval looked to have settled it, Hélio Varela struck again on the hour to claw back a point. They mustered 0.77 expected goals to Uruguay's 2.28 and a third of the possession — then turned two of their few clear sights into goals. Clinical is the kindest word for it, and the fair one. A draw that will feel like a win.

Cape Verde 0–0 Saudi Arabia
Cape Verde will wonder how this finished goalless. They were the better side for long stretches — fifteen shots to seven, an expected-goals line of 1.46 to 0.4 — and created more than enough to win a tight game against Saudi Arabia. What they lacked was the final touch. A point keeps them ticking along, but on this evidence it should have been three, and the missing ingredient was not chances but composure in front of goal. Encouraging in almost every respect except the one that decides matches.

Cape Verde 2–3 Argentina
Cape Verde, ranked thirty-ninth and dead last of the sides here, took Argentina to the very end and were ninety seconds from a shootout. Deroy Duarte cancelled out Lionel Messi, and Sidny Lopes Cabral's extra-time strike made it two-all against the giants. Only an own goal denied them. They managed just 0.45 expected goals to Argentina's 2.16 — this was defiance and opportunism, not domination — but they looked the seventh seed in the eye and did not blink. Out, and utterly unbowed.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
