    Saudi Arabia 11 Uruguay

For seventy-nine minutes Saudi Arabia were doing the impossible to a side worth nine times their squad. Abdulelah Al-Amri's first-half goal had them ahead, and behind it the goalkeeper made nine saves while Uruguay piled up twenty-seven shots and fourteen corners against thirty-three percent of the ball. Maximiliano Araújo finally broke through with ten minutes left, and a famous win shrank to a hard-won point. The xG line reads 0.66 to 1.72; they will wear it. Backs to the wall all afternoon, and still standing at the whistle.

Full time · The Report Chasing shadows

    Saudi Arabia 04 Spain

A chastening introduction to the group, and no way to pretend otherwise. Saudi Arabia were chasing shadows from the tenth minute, when Lamine Yamal opened the scoring, and the margin only widened from there. They managed three shots, one on target, and an expected-goals figure of 0.14 against a Spain side in complete command. Their goalkeeper made five saves to keep the scoreline this side of a rout. Four conceded is a hard night to file, but the tournament does not end on one.

Full time · The Report A point, defended

    Saudi Arabia 00 Cape Verde

Saudi Arabia rode their luck a little and will happily take the point. Cape Verde had the better of the contest — fifteen shots to seven, an expected-goals figure of 1.46 to their 0.4 — and for long spells Saudi Arabia were pinned in and hanging on. But they defended their box with discipline, blocked and scrambled when they had to, and walked away with a clean sheet that flatters the run of play but counts all the same. Not a night to remember for the football, but a useful one for the table.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
