    New Zealand 22 Iran

New Zealand will replay this one for a while. Elijah Just scored twice, Chris Wood supplying both, and on each occasion they led at SoFi Stadium against a side that out-shot them seventeen to fourteen. Eight of those fourteen efforts found the target — ruthless, clinical, everything you ask of an underdog on the break — but Iran answered through Rezaeian and Mohebi and the lead never held. A point, when it could so easily have been three. Frustration and pride, in roughly equal measure, and both of them earned.

Full time · The Report Their half-hour in the sun

    New Zealand 13 Egypt

New Zealand had their half-hour in the sun, and for a while it was enough. Finn Surman headed them in front in the 15th minute, and the lead held deep into the second half. Then the difference in class told: Egypt scored three times in twenty-four minutes, and nineteen shots to New Zealand's eleven was the honest measure of the night. Their goalkeeper made four saves and kept the scoreline respectable. A bright start is something to build on, even on a night that got away.

Full time · The Report A goal to keep from a hard night

    New Zealand 15 Belgium

There is no sugar-coating thirty-five shots faced, but New Zealand will leave with one moment to treasure. Against a Belgium side ranked tenth in the field, they were always likely to spend the night defending, and an expected-goals line of 3.6 to 0.24 confirms how one-sided it became. Their goalkeeper made five saves and still picked the ball out five times. But Elijah Just's eighty-fourth-minute strike, on a rare foray forward, gave a corner of Vancouver something to roar about. Outclassed, yes — but they scored against Belgium, and they never stopped trying.

    Goals 28' L. Trossard · 50' L. Trossard · 66' K. De Bruyne · 84' E. Just · 86' R. Lukaku · 94' A. Saelemaekers

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
