   Belgium were made to work, and in the end they were rescued by the cruellest currency in football. Egypt led through Emam Ashour, Mohamed Salah supplying, and for over an hour the tenth-ranked squad on show could not find a way past a stubborn defence. The leveller, when it came in the sixty-sixth minute, was a Mohamed Hany own goal — a point arriving by deflection rather than design. Fifteen shots, only three on target tells the honest story. A draw that feels closer to a let-off, and they will know it.

   Belgium did not just beat New Zealand; they laid siege to them. Thirty-five shots, an expected-goals line of 3.6, and a procession of quality: Leandro Trossard struck either side of the interval, Kevin De Bruyne curled in a third, and Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers added late gloss. The only blemish was Elijah Just's eighty-fourth-minute consolation, which Belgium will happily forgive themselves. Saelemaekers' fourth in the ninety-fourth merely underlined the gulf. This was a top side in full flow, and a reminder of what they can be when the finishing matches the football.

Outplayed for an hour — Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr had Senegal two up and cruising — they were being carved open at will, an expected-goals line of 3.54 to 1.8 the mark of a side hanging on. Then Romelu Lukaku pulled one back on eighty-six, Youri Tielemans levelled three minutes later, and in the last breath of extra time Tielemans buried the penalty that won it. They were second-best for two hours. They are into the last sixteen anyway.
