    Portugal 11 DR Congo

Seventy-five percent of the ball, and almost nothing to show for it. Portugal took the lead early through Joao Neves, Pedro Neto supplying, then spent the afternoon passing in front of a DR Congo side that simply would not be moved. Yoane Wissa's equaliser on the stroke of half-time was no smash-and-grab either — Congo actually edged the expected goals, 0.82 to 0.69, on a quarter of the possession. For the fourth-most-valuable squad here, this is a point dropped and a question asked. Possession is not the same as penetration.

Full time · The Report A procession

    Portugal 50 Uzbekistan

Portugal did not so much win as conduct a procession. Cristiano Ronaldo set the tone inside six minutes and had his second before half-time, Nuno Mendes drilled in between, and by the hour an own goal and Rafael Leao's late strike had made it five. Expected goals of 2.44, nine shots on target, two-thirds of the ball — every department in command. Uzbekistan's goalkeeper made four saves and still picked it out of his net five times. A ruthless afternoon — and the old man is still the headline act.

Full time · The Report A point, clung to

    Portugal 00 Colombia

Portugal were second best from first whistle to last and will not care one bit. Pinned in by a relentless Colombia — twenty-four shots faced, an expected-goals deficit of 1.63 to 0.69 — they defended for their lives and rode their luck when it mattered most. Their goalkeeper made six saves, and when Davinson Sanchez did finally beat him deep in stoppage, the offside flag spared them. For the fourth-ranked side here this was not a performance to savour, but a clean sheet and a point, dug out of a night under siege, will do nicely.

Full time · The Report Nerve held, in the end

    Portugal 21 Croatia

Portugal needed every one of the four added minutes, and a long night with the video screen, to get here. Ivan Perišić stunned them just after the break; Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the spot on sixty-eight, having already had a goal ruled out for offside. Then, in the ninety-fourth minute, Gonçalo Ramos turned in Rafael Leão's cross to win it — one of three goals VAR weighed on the night. The fourth seed created the better chances, 2.18 expected goals to 1.34, and just about deserved it. Into the last sixteen, hearts intact.

    Portugal 01 Spain

Portugal held Spain for ninety minutes and lost the tie in the ninety-first. Mikel Merino's stoppage-time finish, set up by Ferran Torres, ended a taut derby that had looked destined for extra time. Portugal defended the neighbours with real discipline, their goalkeeper equal to most of what came, but carried too little going forward to make the game their own. A tournament of promise ends on the cruelest of margins — one lapse, one cross, one goal. Portugal are out.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
