Full time · The Report Twice level, beaten
Croatia 2–4 England
Twice Croatia clawed their way level against one of the favourites, and twice it wasn't enough. Martin Baturina and Petar Musa both struck before half-time to answer Harry Kane, and from 0.71 expected goals, two on the board is a ruthless return. But England's 2.8 told the truer story: twenty-two shots, eleven on target, and a class gap that reopened after the break through Bellingham and Rashford. Their goalkeeper made seven saves and still picked the ball out four times. Beaten by the better side, but they made them sweat for it.

Full time · The Report Patience rewarded
Croatia 1–0 Panama
This was the kind of night that rewards patience. Ante Budimir's header just before the hour, turned in from Josip Stanisic's delivery, was the single moment of quality a tight, chanceless game was ever going to produce. Croatia saw nearly two-thirds of the ball without often turning it into clear sights, and their expected-goals tally barely cleared zero. But they took the one chance that mattered, and a one-nil built on control and a set-piece is the sort of win that travels deep into a tournament. Job done, quietly.

Croatia 2–1 Ghana
This was not a Croatia performance for the highlight reel, but it was a winning one, and at this stage of a tournament that is what counts. Petar Sucic gave them a first-half lead, and when Derrick Luckassen hauled Ghana level just past the hour, the game tilted into a genuine contest. Nikola Vlasic settled it in the eighty-third, the decisive touch on a tight afternoon the expected goals — 0.46 to 0.73 — suggest could have gone either way. Croatia found a way without playing well. Good teams tend to do exactly that.

Croatia 1–2 Portugal
Croatia were ninety seconds from extra time and go home with nothing. Ivan Perišić's second-half strike had them ahead and belief surging, and even after Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty they were the more threatening, forcing five saves. But the margins went against them — a disallowed goal of their own, then Gonçalo Ramos deep into stoppage time. The numbers were unkind too, 1.34 expected goals to Portugal's 2.18. They gave the fourth seed a real fright and leave with none of the reward. Knockout football keeps no change.
