On home soil the hosts looked the part, and Folarin Balogun was the reason. An own goal settled the nerves at SoFi inside seven minutes, then Balogun struck twice before the break, Pulisic and Tillman supplying. Sixty-five percent of the ball, four goals, and a Gio Reyna finish at the death made it comfortable, even after Mauricio gave Paraguay something to hold. There is a long way to go this summer. But this was a team that played like it intends to be a problem.

    USA 20 Australia

USA did the unglamorous things well. An own goal handed them the lead inside eleven minutes, and the rest of the night justified the scoreboard — sixty-two percent of the ball, the better of the chances, and Freeman's strike before the interval to make it two. A clean sheet and an expected-goals edge of 1.3 to 0.44 round out a controlled evening. Not one to set pulses racing, but the kind that quietly stacks points.

Full time · The Report Eighteen shots, and heartbreak

    USA 23 Turkey

The United States will wonder how they came out of this with nothing. They had eighteen shots, twice fought back from behind — Auston Trusty inside three minutes, Sergino Berhalter just after the hour — and looked, for long spells, the busier team. But Turkey carried the greater threat where it counted, an expected-goals line of 2.01 to 3.21 telling the story of chances that bit harder, and Kaan Ayhan's ninety-eighth-minute strike was the cruellest way to lose it. There is plenty here to build on. None of it will soften a defeat that arrived at the very last.

Full time · The Report Down to ten, up and through

    USA 20 Bosnia and Herzegovina

The United States did it the hard way and will not care one bit. Folarin Balogun struck on the stroke of half-time, then left his side a man light with a red card on sixty-four — and still they held firm, Malik Tillman settling it on eighty-two. Bosnia had more of the ball and more shots but only 0.25 expected goals to America's 0.92; the hosts defended the lead with ten men and real nerve. Not pretty, thoroughly effective. Into the last sixteen.

Full time · The Report A home dream ends heavily

    USA 14 Belgium

A home World Cup ended in a chastening night in Seattle. The United States had the majority of the ball and even drew level through Malik Tillman, but Belgium were on another plane in front of goal. Charles De Ketelaere's two first-half strikes did the damage; Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku made the margin brutal. Possession counts for nothing when every Belgian opening seems to find the net. The co-hosts bow out four goals to one, a nation that dared to dream left silent.

    Goals 9' C. De Ketelaere · 31' M. Tillman · 33' C. De Ketelaere · 57' H. Vanaken · 90+3' R. Lukaku

    xG 0.67–2.15 ·Poss 56% ·Shots 7 (2 on target) ·Corners 3 ·GK saves 3

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
