About Qatar
Population 3.2M
- Long before oil, Qatar's coast ran a purple-dye industry from sea snails — among the earliest known anywhere.
- It's an expat nation: of roughly 2.6 million residents, only about 313,000 are actually citizens.
- Beneath it lies the world's third-largest natural-gas reserve, making it one of the top exporters of liquefied gas.
- The peninsula juts about 160 km into the Persian Gulf and is strikingly flat — its highest point reaches just 103 metres.

Qatar 1–1 Switzerland
Be honest about how this point was won: thirty-two percent of the ball, six shots all afternoon, and a Swiss own goal in the ninetieth minute that no one in a Qatar shirt will apologise for. The cheapest squad in the tournament read its xG line of 0.6 to 3.2 and decided it simply would not lose. The goalkeeper made five saves and the defence threw itself in front of everything. Second best for ninety minutes, and leaving with something. Some nights that is the whole art of it.

Some nights the scoreline is the least of it. Qatar lost two men to red cards — by the hour they were down to nine — and a Canada side in this mood needed no second invitation. The expected goals read 4.11 to 0.18, and even then their goalkeeper found four saves to keep it from climbing higher. They kept their shape and their feet when both would have been easy to lose. A night to file away, and move on from.

Qatar 1–3 Bosnia and Herzegovina
Qatar came up short, but not for want of a fight. The lowest-ranked side in the field, forty-eighth of forty-eight by squad value, went toe to toe with Bosnia and Herzegovina and had a goal to show for it, Hassan Al Haydos pulling one back just before the interval. The expected-goals columns were almost level at 0.77 to 0.64, which tells you this was closer than three-one suggests. Two switched-off moments and an own goal were the difference. They leave with their heads up and a finer margin than the scoreline admits.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
