Breel Embolo's early penalty, twenty-six shots, ten corners, an expected-goals line of 3.2 to 0.6 — Switzerland did everything but kill the game, and in this tournament that sentence tends to end badly. It ended with Miro Muheim turning into his own net in the ninetieth, a win collapsing into a point, and a Qatar goalkeeper who had already made five saves being mobbed like a hero. Switzerland were the better side. It won't help. They have to start burying these.

The expected-goals line, 2.01 to 0.24, says Switzerland were the better side long before the scoreboard agreed. Proof, if it were needed, that you never turn this one off early.

The game turned in a ruthless second-half spell: Ruben Vargas at the restart, Johan Manzambi soon after, and a two-goal cushion built almost from nowhere. Jonathan David pulled one back, but a goalkeeper with six saves saw it out. Take your chances, trust your keeper; some wins look exactly like this.
