About Australia
Population 27.7M
- Aboriginal Australians have lived here for 50,000 to 65,000 years — one of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth, speaking more than 250 languages when Europeans arrived.
- It's the flattest and driest inhabited continent, averaging just 325 metres above sea level and only about 470 mm of rain a year.
- Roughly 95% of Australians live within 100 km of the coast, against a global average closer to 39%.
- The Great Barrier Reef off the north-east is the world's largest coral reef system, stretching more than 2,300 km.
- The oldest scrap of Earth's crust ever found — zircon crystals dated to 4.4 billion years — was discovered in Western Australia.

Australia 2–0 Turkey
Nine shots to thirty. Twenty-eight percent of the ball. A two-nil win. Read that line twice, because Australia will. Nestory Irankunda struck first from Okon-Engstler's pass, Connor Metcalfe settled it, and in between a goalkeeper made eight saves and dared Turkey to find a way through. The expected goals barely favoured them, which is the analyst's way of saying this was won on nerve and last-ditch defending, not control. They will not apologise for a single minute of it. Nights like this are why you defend with your life.

Australia 0–2 USA
Australia will feel the first goal did for them. An eleventh-minute own goal handed the United States a lead, and from a side already on the back foot it asked too much. They saw little of the ball — thirty-eight percent — and mustered just 0.44 expected goals, Freeman's finish before half-time ending the contest as a contest. There was honest effort in it, if not the cutting edge the night demanded. One to learn from, not to dwell on.

Australia 0–0 Paraguay
Australia did almost everything but score. They had fifty-six percent of the ball, twelve shots to Paraguay's seven, five on target to two — and ran into a goalkeeper determined to keep his net clean, five saves and not one of them beaten. An expected-goals line of 0.57 is the honest catch, though: for all the territory, the genuinely clear chance never quite arrived. This was control without a cutting edge, the kind of goalless draw that feels like two points lost. They will create more than this and win. Today, the finish simply would not come.

Australia 1–1 Egypt
Australia hung on for dear life and were beaten where they had no more answers — the spot. Emam Ashour's early goal had them chasing, and it took an own goal to level a game Egypt largely controlled, the numbers stark at 0.87 expected goals to 1.36. They dug in, forced penalties, and there the run ended, four to two. Brave and stubborn to the last, but second-best on the night. Australia go home.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
