The expected goals say they were comprehensively outplayed; the scoreboard says they won. Both are true, and only one goes in the book. A heist, and a thoroughly earned one.

This was a night for the unglamorous virtues — a back line that held its shape, a goalkeeper who made five saves, and a willingness to concede possession and territory in exchange for a clean sheet. Australia had more of the ball and the better openings, twelve shots to seven and five on target to two, but an expected-goals figure of 0.57 tells you the quality never quite matched the volume. Julio Enciso's first-half strike gave them something to defend, and defend it they did, their goalkeeper making six saves as Germany laid siege. Kai Havertz forced extra time, but the wall held, a German goal was ruled out, and at the shootout Paraguay won it four to three. This was backs-to-the-wall football of the bravest kind. The favourites are out; the underdogs march on.

Then a penalty, confirmed by VAR, and Kylian Mbappé did the rest. There is no shame in it — outgunned on paper and beaten only from the spot. Paraguay's tournament ends with their heads held high.
